5 Big Question Marks surrounding the NY Jets
The Jets are looking very good going into the season and I am truly excited about this team. Having Aaron Rodgers at the helm is awesome and it should equate to a playoff year. They also have one of the best Defensive lines in the league, a top #1 wr in Wilson and a dynamic backfield led by Dalvin Cook. On the defensive side they have one of the best defensive lines in football and the best cb duo in Sauce Gardner and
The tight end position- Has Jeremy Ruckert done enough to be the #2 tight end and will they keep Uzomah as #3 if that happens.
The safety position is a major concern based on the tougher schedule and quarterbacks we are going to face. Do we have enough back their with Amos, Adams, Whitehead Davis and Dean in pass coverage. Whitehead and Amos can play the run but are they good enough vs shifty slots and tight ends in man coverage. Keep an eye on that situation as the season progresses. I really like the camp Davis and Trey Dean have had and hopefully they provide some answers on the back end. Expect the Jets to be tested on the back end.
The backup offensive tackle situation. I love Mekhi Becton Great article about his comeback but I want to see how he holds up in protection.Tomlinson has struggled in pass protection and still had some issues in the preseason. Duane Brown is very solid in protection but struggles in the run game. It’s night and day. 72 pff grade in protection and 44 pff grade in the run game. Could have been the shoulder injury but that’s just the reality of it. Do they keep Turner and Mitchell as backup tackles or upgrade at those spots. The interior is solid but depth at tackle is a major concern.
Sherwood in base defense as the 3rd linebacker and overall depth at LB. Barnes has impressed me behind Williams and Mosely but they are thin at that position and haven’t seen enough of Sherwood Williams and Mosely together. Also, Quincy is good against the run but can be isolated in man coverage where he doesn’t excel. They may be missing Kwon Alexander there. Surratt may be a long term solution and a practice player but I want to see more from him.
The backup QB situation scares me a little bit. I know we are all in love with Zach’s improvement(thanks to Aaron) but I want to see him continue to progress in his decision making and accuracy. He’s been great outside the #’s on the deep balls but struggling with the in breaking routes. He does some great things then he misses 2 that should be made.
Heres the great throw.
Heres an example of 1 of
the 2 throws he needs to improve upon. First one is just behind the wr. This is a good route and the ball placement needs to be there. He has a very clean pocket.
The 2nd one is a poor decision post snap on 3rd and 9. Wink gives him a mug look pre snap cover 1 but no one is out on number 3. Pre snap I am thinking cover 1 or 3. Post snap, the coverage is clearly zone but his eyes never leave the #1 wr. Tunnel vision, incomplete and almost a pick.
The wr is taught to work backoutside which if you watch it he was about to do but the ball is thrown. That would have stressed the Cb and opened the deep out (sail route).
Here’s the film with it.
Its not easy to play qb but these are plays that keep the chains moving. He has progressed, especially with the deep ball, but the throws over the middle and decision making need to keep getting better.
These are the 5 aspects and questions the Jets have going into roster cuts and week 1.
