This is a 3x1 concept for mesh. It is very effective, The first concept takes mesh and combines it with y cross.
You are running mesh with #2 on the trips side and the WR to the boundary.
You can see this article and all my work for 14 days, go to: www.coachkoufootball.substack.com/14days
The RB still free releases (but you could easily make it a 6 man protection and keep him in)
You have the crossing route and mesh to the same side. Vs man you have either the mesh crossing to that side or the #3 on the crossing route.
Vs zone you have a high low on the curl flat defender.
A nice route design and concept
Texas example #2
They run y cross with mesh underneath just from bunch.
The Chiefs run it out of bunch. They use Hill on the deep over route. Nice variation and hill is open on the crossing route.
At the pro level, here’s a clip of the Chiefs version discussed above
This is just one of the variations of mesh you will see.
Here’s another as the Colts run mesh with a comeback on the outside. Usually #1 will do an out or different route, you don’t see the curl too much.
The #1 WR sits down in the zone and is open. The Defense did nice job taking away the mesh route and Warner getting under the sit.
Film.
They motion Kelce in he runs the flat but they still have the mesh.
TE motions back and goes to the flat instead of RB. He’s wide open in the flat.
Point man runs the corner. Still have the mesh coming across, TE is wide open
Mesh 3x1 with a motion to an already stacked formation.
They run y cross with #1 running the mesh with #1 on the other side. The #2 WR runs the cross with #3 running the dig. The RB runs a chute route. The motion causes confusion with the CB and safety and no one takes the crossing route.
Another mesh variation is to go bunch and motion the tight end back into the backfield and throw him the football.
The Tight End runs the back flat route like the Chiefs do with Kelce.
The Lions run a similar variation that allows the wr to work in space. They run #1 across the formation.
Running mesh away from the RB. As the 1st crosser goes the other direction with the crossing route and 2nd crosser coming to the 1 wr side.
Bills run Mesh with y cross
Ohio State runs a nice mesh variation for Harrison #1 runs a fly, They send the back the other way and run mesh towards the #1 wr. The #3 wr runs a vertical route with an outside release.
Maryland runs mesh and allows their WR to work in space. Always a great concept running it away from the RB with three wr coming the other way.
Mesh Curl variation
A nice variation where the outside wr will run curls and the mesh route is run by the 2 inside wr. A nice change up and variation.
