Boise State Pass Game Concepts: Sneak Route and Post Wheel Shallow Concepts
Share

Boise State was a high powered offense in 2024 averaging 35 points per game. They were well known for their run game in 2024, rushing for 232 yards per game. But, they were also very efficient in their play action and some of their passing concepts. Let’s take a look at their sneak concept. This concept was on display in almost every game they played.

They love to run it vs teams that roll to cover 3 vs their 3x1 sets and play meg(man everywhere he goes) on the #1 WR. The coverage will often open the TE on a vertical type route down the seam.

(The 4 clips will be below the example)

Example #1

12 Personnel: They run the sneak route off play action. They fake wide zone left, half roll the QB and hit the sneak route vs Penn State.

The beauty of the play is the defense is in cover 3 strong but man on the single side. This forces the CB to take the WR #1 vertical and no one covers the wheel route.

They hit it for a 52 yard touchdown.

As you can see the CB takes the #1 WR and it opens the TE up vertically.

Example #2

11P sneak route with the smash concept to the 2 wr side.

Defense: 1/4 to the field, trap coverage to the boundary. The CB has to adjust after the run read at him and bails to get over the RB out on the vertical seam route. This opens the drag route.

Example #3

They run it out of 11P the motion the WR back to the TE Wing side to create a 3x1 look.

Defense: They create the cover 3 look to the 3x1 side and get a match/Meg situation on the backside as the CB takes #1 vertically.

They fake and run boot and hit the TE down the seam. The OLB is late because he has to play the run and the CB went Meg on #1

Example #4

They again get a cover 3 match situation and exploit the defense.

Again they are in 12P and this time run the sneak route with their WR. He fakes and delays and runs down the numbers off the play action.
