I took 10 clips of Caleb Williams and went over some analysis of his throws and things he does well.
One thing you will see is a ton of Shane Waldron moving him around the pocket on boot.Shane Waldron Boot Schemes is in the link. Shane is a great offensive coordinator who will play to his strengths. Expect a ton of boot and play action with numerous 12 and 11 personnel sets on early downs.
From the preseason, these are my takes:
Positives:
Can make the high level throws in small windows
His ability to move will really be an asset in the run/boot play action game
He can keep plays alive with his feet
Understands the progressions and how each route concepts develops. Was pretty solid with his reads and progressions
Negative:
His mechanics get sloppy when he’s on the move and needs to settle down at times in the pocket. He doesn’t need to throw everything on the run
He can force the ball at times which is common with young QB
Did get caught a few times with some disguise coverages and has to be able to adjust quickly. (not a major concern, happens to the best of them)
Ok, but lets look at some schemes and plays.
Let’s look at some clips with some analysis of everything discussed above.
#1
This is an NFL type throw in a tight window that impressed me.
#2 Ability to improvise
#3 and #4
The first one is a ball that comes out late that may have been picked off. I didn’t like the throw and mechanics. These are throws he has to be careful on. The 2nd clip is a boot you will see often from Waldron in the offense.
#5 As talked about earlier, another boot from Waldron on 1st down.
#6 Improvising and Creating time
In this example the defense takes away the route combo of dagger, he doesn’t force it. The wr makes a good sight adjustment and the ball just gets out a little late.
#7 The Bears go 3x1 bunch, Williams takes what he is given. The Bengals give him cover 3 with man on the single side.
What happens on this play is that the RB is late to get out to the flat, so #27 can sit inside and play the shallow. If the RB gets out sooner, he can throw the shallow or the RB because of the situation.
As discussed earlier, the one thing he has to work on is when he gets on the move, not to get away from his mechanics. Here’s an example of another situation in which he could set his feet and make an easy throw.
But the ability to improvise and keep plays alive will be a nightmare for defensive coordinators in how they game plan.
I hope you enjoyed these clips. He is an exciting talent who will only get better as the season goes on.
