Chiefs vs Bills- Some of the coverages the Chiefs used while spying Josh Allen
One of the ways to defend Josh Allen is to spy him with a LB or DB. This is often used due to the great running ability of Josh Allen.
This strategy was on display when the Chiefs defended Josh Allen in their playoff game. This strategy was often used when Josh Allen was in the shot gun formation as the Chiefs would only send 3 rushers and look to spy Allen and add in late with a LB. It is effective because Allen so many times can defeat you with his legs. The defense plays a 3-2 package in this situation with 6 defensive backs in the game. This allows more speed on the field to help with coverage as well as having faster players spy the qb.
Let’s look at some of the strategies the Chiefs used in both their regular season game and their playoff game.
Regular Season
Here they show like they are sending 5 but go 2 man spy. This is just a 3 man rush with a spy on Allen.
You see the effective spy by #50 and Allen has no place to run.
Example #2
3rd and 10
Again 3-2 dime package, showing pressure with LB’s. Pre nap cover 1/3 post snap 2man spy
Film
Example #3
The next play is a great interception.
The Chiefs sort out the bunch route and the safety looks like he’s a hole defender with the inside LB playing 3 across. It could be just man free with the safety on #3 and he passes it off but he comes back inside and makes a great play when Allen scrambles.
The Chiefs make a great play on it.
Love the way they play the bunch as well.
