Coaching Football Pass Concept #8: The Drive Concept
The Drive concept is a route used at both the NFL and college level. It is a route combination of a basic dig by one wr at 10-12 yards and a shallow by the outside wr off the dig route. You also have a post built in to the #1 wr in trips which allows the qb to take peak vs cover 4. Meaning if the safety jumps the dig you have an alert throw to the post. The purpose of the play is to get lb to come up and play the shallow vs zone or chase the shallow vs man and open up the dig route.
The nice thing about it is it is a high low on a LB and easy read for a qb as it creates 2 routes in his line of vision. It is similar to the shallow cross concept in some ways, yet a different look for defenses. You can tag it with other routes as well to stretch the defense in various ways.
The beauty of it is you can run it out of any set you want and tag routes away from it. I like to tag it with the sail concept so you can also have some answers vs cover 2.
Here is the concept out of empty
Bunch
I like adding the corner route in bunch. Why? You will often get some cover 2 or man so the corner route gives you a nice option. You can also release the back to the 3x1 side on a swing or arrow to help hold the cb. I didn’t put that on the next slide but you can do that as well. I have the back releasing to get the stretch on the OLB or SS.
