The wide zone counter option is a great play for the Coastal Carolina football team. It is a highly efficient play as it is tough to defend because of the horizontal movement of the play. They run traditional wide zone as well so it's an excellent compliment to what they do.

What makes it hard on the defense is the multiple sets and other plays they run. In this situation they have 2 reads.

The 1st read is the defensive tackle for dive. If he takes the rb on the wide zone action, the qb will pull the football. From there he will pitch off the DE. The h back will come around from his position and lead on the edge. They ran this play 3 times for huge yards when they played Northern Illinois. They were able to pitch it and get it on the edge on 3 occasions. This first example is a 60 yard gain.

Below is a touchdown run

THE DT TAKES THE DIVE SO THE QB PULLS THE FOOTBALL

Dive key falls for the dive, pitch key comes inside so they pitch it.

Likely wrapping around from the tight end position cleans up on the lb and they are off.

Play #2 vs NIU

They run it again out of 21 formation. H off. They bring likely around again and the wr cracks on the ss. The defense has a scrape exchange call on so the de comes down real hard. The dt is slanting inside too. The de takes himself out of the play and the qb pitches off the olb who is getting cracked. The TE gets the cb and it's another td. 34 yard touchdown on the same play.

NIU Scrape exchanges.

The scrape exchange doesn't work and they are on the perimeter.

Nice play and execution

3rd example,21 personnel again, They crack again with the wr and lead the h back on the cb. 17 yards on this play. The de chases the wide zone and easy pull and pitch. Get on the edge and block up the play nicely getting good angles.

DE dips inside for dive. Qb could have kept running but pitches the ball. They have nice angle on the crack block with the wr and TE looping for the cb.

They crack on the perimeter.

Nice job with the Dive read.

Pitch key crosses the path of the crack block on #2 so the wr blocks him.

They crack on the pitch key, the H back blocks the cb as he loops around and it;'s an efficient 17 yard gain on the play.

So on the day they ran it 3 times for 111 yards. Pretty efficient day with the wide zone counter option.

The Same play vs the odd front. They read the DT for the dive give and pull it and run option. They end up blocking everyone as the TE blocks what may have been the pitch key, but they still get nice yardage on the play.

They read the DT #43 for the Dive. He chases the dive so its a pull read. Nice job and then he gets aa nice gain as he keeps it.

DT takes the dive #35 is the pitch key above

Another well run play off their wide zone vs App State. They are very efficient with this play and has been a big part of their offense.
