I love the Dolphins cheetah outside motion. It is a very effective tool that can be utilized in todays. passing game.
I find it useful for 2 reasons:
It is very good in the rpo game as this is one of the main uses for it. The Dolphins love to run rpo and then bring the TE or wr from the other side with the motion.
It creates windows vs zone defenses. It creates problems defensively as defenses have to adjust quickly with the motion
Here’s a few rpo’s that have been utilized by the Dolphins.
The 1st is from 11 personnel good fake and Hill is open on the bender type concept.
The next one is from 21 personnel
They fake the run and hit the fullback in the flat to the right side. Nice job on the fake and Hill and Waddle stretching the defense.
2 clips of the plays above.
Here’s another version vs the Washington Football Team.
They send waddle outside and hit the #1 wr on a read route. He settle down in the void.
Here’s the clip with it.
Another 2 versions of running traditional pass concepts.
#1 is Friday (out cut with the #1 running a fade with a mandatory outside release)
#2 is the sail concept and Hill outruns the coverage.
Here are the 2 clips with it.
The Dolphins passing attack against the Chargers was on fire in week 1. The beneficiary was Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. This past week they ran a new wrinkle with the #2 wr sprinting the sideline presnap. They did this with Tyreek Hill a few times and it caused a problem for the Chargers defense.
The great thing about the motion is it creates a clear picture for our QB on whether the defense is in zone or man.
Lets look at the 5 times they used it.
Example #1
They run Hill to the sideline and run the post dig dagger concept. They execute it perfectly and Tua throws a strike vs man free coverage
Example #2
The route concept:
Smash on the front side
backside y cross with the dig
The defense is in man free and the smash is covered so he works the backside crosser. Any time McDaniel runs a hitch with Hill the defense should thank him.

Example #3
In the next example they run it out of empty.
To he top of the screen , drive concept. Bottom of the screen, quarters beater with the hook at 10 and the fly. Tua scrambles and hits the comeback by the WR in the scramble drill as the defense is in cover 42, 2 to the 3 WR side and quarters to the 2 WR side.
Hill is the one who went in motion and runs the go route.
Hill runs a fly and the #2 wr runs a 10 yard hool. Hill is 1x1 with the CB but Tua comes off him and works the 3 WR side.
#4
The net concept is an RPO but this time without Hill running the motion. They run fast motion and the defense doesn’t adjust so they throw the ball on the RPO. An excellent job by the offense and another good scheme by McDandiel.
#5 is fast motion just from the other side. They run snag with the dig which is one of my favorite concepts. The motion creates nice spacing allowing the high low of the curl defender.
The defense is in 2 robber on the play but Hill doesn’t bring the route too far in which makes it an easy read off the SS outside LB.
Week 2 vs the Patriots!
Empty formation, Cheetah Motion, Patriots go zone and they hit the void.
They run Hill in motion send him deep and run #1 on the hitch and go. They hit him for the nice gain as Hill draws the defense to him vertically. Nice route by the #1 wr.
On the goal line the send the TE to the sideline in Fast motion and it opens up the WR Hill on the out cut. Excellent play design as they hit him for the easy touchdown.
Example #2
Hit Waddle on the quick screen as Hill runs down the sideline as a decoy. The sell it and the O line does a great job getting out on the screen.
Here are 5 other plays from week 2 that you can see below that incorporate the fast motion to the perimeter!
vs the Giants
They run toss with the motion by Berrios and create great angles in the run game.
Motion man-CB
crack with WR and TE
Get the Tackle on the Nickel
In the 2nd example, they motion Hill out and run a screen with him. Nice esexcution as they get blockers out in front as they stay on their landmarks. RT and RG make their blocks and give Hill enough room to get downfield.
Chiefs Game
An adjustment that McDaniel will make if teams take away orbit is to bring the cheetah motion back the other way in orbit. He did this when the Chiefs were shutting it down early with their coverage and bringing the backside cb.
So McDaniel adjusts and goes orbit motion and runs the rpo back to the single side for a nice completion. He sends him outside then orbits him.
That was a great adjustment and McDaniel has an answer in the adjustment game.
Lastly, here are 6 clips vs the Raiders.
Some RPO’s and other concepts.
All in all, the Dolphins have some excellent concepts with the fast Cheetah motion. They can combine different rpo’s and pass concepts to make it very effective and hard to defend.
