Football Pass Concepts-Top pass concepts in the Red Zone
This article looks at my top pass plays in the red zone. You will find several Well designed plays that you can use from the 20 yard line and in. These are efficient plays that can be used in any situation down in the red zone.
Wake Forest & Joe Moorhead Pop Pass- Play Action
The pop pass to #3 is a great red zone concept. I have seen it from numerous coaches like Joe Moorhead and others.
Who stole it from who?
Penn State Joe Moorhead version!
Bears Fake Reverse- Y delay
The Bears fake the reverse, fake inside zone and have the on the ball tight end delay and work to the corner. Great design and should be a td. Fields just overthrows the TE on a great design out of 12 personnel.
49ers Angle/Whip Route
The 49ers run the whip route opposite the angle route. If the Lb expands and pushes towards the corner angle, come back to the whip route on the other side.
#2 example of the whip route.
Seahawks Shallow wheel concept
The Seahawks run a nice concept with the shallow to the wheel. Excellent zone and man concept. The qb reads man and hits the RB on the wheel route. If zone, would have the shallow to the dig. Nice design.
Lions 2 wheel/fade off rub concept
The Chiefs run a version of mesh off play action.
They run the mesh away from the RB which allows Kelce to operate in space. Excellent design as no place to go defensively as the DB is picked by the wr coming the other way.
Florida State runs the drive concept to the top of the screen vs man coverage. Excellent route in the red zone against man coverage.
Coastal Carolina-Fake qb draw, hit the TE vertical #3 on a pop pass. The qb makes a great fake like he is running and dumps it to the rb right down the middle of the field. The #2 wr run corner routes. Excellent play vs cover 2 or 4 in the red zone.
Mesh away from the formation and running back. Bringing the RB across to the other side against man coverage is nearly impossible to defend in the red zone.
USC Short yardage pick route
USC Short yardage 2 pick for 3
USC Sprints on the goal line out of bunch. They run a nice rub route concept as 2 picks for 3. 3 finds the opening in the zone for the touchdown!
NFL Angle route
This is a popular play in the tight red zone! Very good play and hard to defend but takes some timing.
Here are some versions you see:
#1 runs the angle route
#2 is #2 wr runs the angle behind. the slant
#3 The #3 wr runs the angle with a pick concept from #2
Put your best WR at RB. The Vikings line up Jefferson in the backfield at the RB position. Nice design as they give him an option route.
Here are a few other times and schemes teams used to put their best WR in the backfield in the red zone.
St Brown Lions
The Lions huddle quick and move St Brown from in the backfield to #3 wr. He runs a stick type concept, sits it down and they hit him for a touchdown.
Miami Dolphins Tyreek Hill
They put Tyreek in the backfield and they get 1x1 with him and the Safety Whitehead.
Here are 6 more clips of the angle concept in the red zone that incorporate both RB and wr.
The Lions run the hb down the middle. Goff is moved off his mark or it would be a touchdown!
The #1 wr grab the safeties in cover 4 on both sides which opens up the HB right down the middle of the field.
Chiefs run the RB choice route in the red zone. The RB can run it to the flat or plant and come back inside if he likes leverage.
The Cardinals 14 personnel. Fake QB draw Y pop. They bring in the extra offensive lineman and run the y pop.
These are just some of the great plays you will see in the red zone. I hope you enjoyed this post and incorporate some of these into your game plan!!!
