This article looks at how teams use either full slide or G Pull protection in their play action run game.
Full Slide Protection:
Full slide protection is a great protection. It is used when the entire O-line slides in either direction and each OL blocks the gap to the side of the call, so if it's a full slide right , each OL is responsible for the gap to his right, creating a wall to that side and protecting the gap to that side.
G Pull Protection:
The Guard will pull off play action and block the DE to the side away from him. The Guard and tackle on that side will block down and the center will block the man over the pulling guard. The tackle to the side of the pulling guard will block the DE on his side. Easy scheme.
The Falcons made full slide popular in 16 with Shanahan and everyone seems to have some of it in some form. But, when Shanahan went to SF he started pulling the Guard more.
2 reasons for the change:
1. Get a guard on a DE rather than a TE and get a better matchup.
2.You have Kittle and want to get him in routes.
Here are some examples:
Full slide off wide zone.
The wide zone fake freezes everyone. TE does a good job slide protection.
Great job on the fake and getting the defense to move laterally.
The Falcons run play action off it vs the Patriots in the Super Bowl
G Pull Protection
G pull protection is different because it pulls the guard and puts him on the defensive end rather than an h back in full slide.
You will see the
RT block down
RG block DT
Center block back for the guard
LT man on
LG pull and block the DE #8(he drops into coverage)
Easy scheme to put in and execute
The video explains the rationale behind it and why teams run it. I hope you enjoyed some clips showing examples of both designs.
