Gus Malzhan Gap Scheme Spread Sweep Variation
The buck sweep is a great play and teams have taken this wing t concept and applied throughout college football and the NFL. It is a great play that usually is run with a tight end in the game. That tight end can be both on or off the ball, but I prefer using it with the tight end on.
It is great to attack a 6i with as your guard can often get around and lead on the 2nd level. But it also has merit vs a 9 as your Guard can kick out a defensive end and the other guard lead through. So you can run it vs both options.
Let’s look at Alabama attacking the 6i vs Ole Miss. They get the nice down block with the tight end and the guard pulls and has a defender off the edge so he kicks him out. If a defender kick, if not fold up to the first man outside the tight end.
Here’s another example with the the sweep scheme out of 3x1. Again this is a great play when you run it away from the tight end. Whether you go 3x1 or 2x2 with the tight end on, both can be effective. Especially when teams cloud that side trying to play cover 2 to the boundary.
The Panthers run it here vs the Bills.
They get a nice down block on the tight end with the 6i, the tackle blocks the 3 technique. Again it’s a great play to attack a 6i
They go in motion and get man coverage. This sets up the blocks nicely as they lead with the fullback and both guards are able to turn the corner with weak run support on the perimeter.
QB READ
You can also run it with a QB read component. Run outside zone to the trips side but sweep back to the tight end side.
Kentucky does an excellent job with this variation below. Again the pin and pull is vs an even front with the tight end on the line of scrimmage. The defense has a 3 technique and a 6i to the tight end side!
Dallas Cowboys RPO
The Cowboys sweep block with the wing and tight end and ever and twins to the field. They run a nice bubble screen and if Dak likes it he throws it.
Auburn running it from a condensed y off set where they motion the h back inside to create angles in the run game!
Auburn YouTube Analysis
You can see my Auburn sweep analysis on my youtube page. This is a detailed explanation of how Auburn runs it both with the tight end on and off the line of scrimmage.
One thing you will notice about Auburn is they love to crack with their wide receivers and have the Guard block the corner to the front side.
Excellent schemes by Auburn.
I hope you enjoyed these article on the sweep and different variations of it.
