Jets Recap:Top Takeaways from the Jets 49ers

The Jets and 49ers played in week 1 with the 49ers taking a 32-19 game. It was interesting as the game was even in several areas. If you look at the keys it was really the fact that the 49ers dominated on both sides in the run game. In the pass department, I thought Rodgers and Purdy played good enough to win. The passing stats were similar as the chart below shows.

So the stats in the passing game wasn’t glaring so it game down to a few key aspects of the game.

1.The Jets run game defense was atrocious. They had major holes going into the season at edge and defensive tackle and they were exposed. They got worn down and other than Q Williams the run defense is very average. They gave up 180 yards on 38 carries and averaged 4.7 yards per game.

2.The Jets struggled running the ball and were only to gain 68 yards on 19 carries. Breece Hall didn’t look as explosive. He didn’t seem to have his explosiveness. I would love to see Allen get more touches early and get involved. He could be a force.

49ers had a good plan against the Jets and 12 personnel. They sparked the DE inside with the motion and really played him down hard inside. This was one of the issues they had against the aggressive offense.

Here’s a few runs where you see the 49ers really getting off blocks and making plays in the run game.

3. The Jets lost the turnover margin 2-0. They had a key fumble and interception which led to 6 points.

Here they get man free coverage and Rodgers tries to throw to Wilson on the outside breaking route, it’s deflected and picked off.

4.They couldn’t protect Rodgers on 3rd down in the 1st half. On two crucial 3rd downs, they didn’t help on their OT and left Bosa 1 on 1 with Smith. 2 all pro's going at it and Bosa one on these 2 3rd downs. It forced them to go to more 6 and 7 man protection but those 2 sacks early caused them to end drives early in the game.

Bosa gets held on the next 3rd down and it changes the outcome of the game.

5. They didn’t get Conklin involved at all. That’s an issue as he needs to be more of a focal point.

6. The Tight Ends have to do a better job in the run game. They ran 2 plays on the edge and on both situations the tight ends don’t get the job done. On the first play of the game, they miss the play side LB. On the next play the DE sparks inside and they don’t touch him and he makes the tackle.

All in all, the Jets struggled running the ball and stopping the run. Once these areas continue to improve the team will see some great results. It’s still early and their is plenty of football to be played.
