Kansas State QB Designed Run Game. Zone Read, Pin and Pull, Trap and more!

The Kansas State offense was very efficient running the football in 2023. They ran for 202 yards per game and were 11th in the country! They ran numerous gap schemes and utilized various unbalanced formations. They also were effective in the QB designed run game. This article will look at some of those concepts.

21P Zone Read

K State comes out in 21 personnel and runs zone read. They read the DE and the TE blocks the CB with the FB leading for the strong safety.

The QB gets a pull read and makes the correct read. They get 2x2 on the perimeter and the LT and LG handle the stack in the 4-2 look.

You can see how the blocks develop and they get good angles on the DB’s.

Jet QB Trap

In the next play, they run qb trap off jet motion. They are in 11 personnel with the FB/HB split to the field.

The scheme is a trap scheme as they pull the guard!

They get fast flow from the LB and FS as they both fly with the Jet motion. They pull the Guard and get a great seam for the QB. They create great angles with the motion.

You can see the huge hole as the Safety and Mike LB play the jet. The DE even steps upfield which sets up the trap block.

QB Pin and Pull

They run pin and pull with slice motion. The slice concept pulls the safety as the defense is in man to man coverage. This allows the 2 pullers to get on the edge while removing a defender from the equation. They also lead the RB.

The other aspect of this is they create great angles:
#1 The TE has a great angle on the 6i

#2 The LG has a great angle on the 2i

#3 They lead with the RB.

The Safety goes with the slice motion. This will then create the excellent angles for the other players in the run game.

The LT and Center both get out and make good blocks.

They get the 2 pullers out with the RB. If not for the backside DE making the tackle, it’s a touchdown.
