Kellen Moore Eagles Offense: Wide Zone Variations You May See!

I did some research from the past 2 years of Kellen Moore and his offense. He is an excellent offensive coordinator who had great success with the Cowboys as their offensive coordinator from 2019-2022. In 2023, he coached the LA Chargers and the offense was not as good as his 4 years with the Cowboys, mainly because it was decimated by injuries and a weaker offensive line.

One misconception is that Kellen Moore doesn’t want to run the football. That is the farthest from the truth, if you look at his numbers with the Cowboys the 4 years he was there.

With the Cowboys:
2022: 4th in scoring 26.8 points per game, 9th in rushing 131 yards per game
2021: 1st in scoring 30.4 points per game, 9th in rushing 122 yards per game
2019: 6th in scoring 27.1 points per game, 4th in rushing 134 yards per game

He had a great run with the Cowboys and had various schemes he ran. I will go over some of the other ones in my future articles regarding his offense!

For this article, we will look at some of his wide zone principles and plays. Their are several variations but I focused on 4.

The 5 schemes:
Wide Zone
Wide Zone Slice
Wide Zone Wrap
Wide Zone Lead
Wide Zone Insert

Kellen loves running wide zone, especially at a 2i or shade. He has a preference to run it more to the 2i side when running wide zone. Wide zone is a play that gets offensive lineman on the same path while creating cutback lanes for the running back.

Here are 2 diagrams of the scheme vs the Bears. They run it at the 2i/shade in both situations.

#2

These are the looks and they call wide zone to that 3 man surface side. The Center is able to get to the Nose guard.

The other point is that they are able to get a cutback lane for the RB.

Here are some other wide zone clips.

Wide Zone H Wrap

They run H wrap from condensed out of 12P. They displace the LB and get them moving creating angles for their offensive line.

They block solid on the TE in the 9 tech and lead the h through the hole. They could also make a call and slice block with the H back and have the TE go inside.

The thing I love is when the RB and the OLine shoulders are on the same angle.
