This post looks at the Miami Dolphins run game and their flip play.
The Miami Dolphins under Coach McDaniels are efficient this season in the run game. They lead the league with 5.1 rush yards per carry and are 5th in the league in rushing yards per game with 136 yards per game.
They have a two headed monster with their running back duo of Mostert and Achane. Achane has a whopping 7.8 yards per carry. Mostert is still very good with his 4.8 yards per carry. They have combined for 1,812 yards on 312 carries. That’s a whopping 5.8 yards per carry.
Lets look at a few of the scheme of their popular flip play.
Flip Play
This freeze option play was very efficient with Coastal Carolina. The QB opens one way which freezes the LB then tosses the ball to the RB in the other direction. They utilize an aggressive gap scheme up front and work to the 2nd level with their double teams. I would consider it more gap than zone the way they block it.
The #1 use for the play is it sets up angles to get to the LB by freezing them or getting them to flow in the opposite direction.
The Run action freezes the LB and allows the Center and Tackle to get to the LB by creating good angles in the run game.
Here is the clip with the film.
