NFC East: Every Teams 3 Biggest Needs Entering the 2023 season
In this article we will look at some of the biggest needs of every team in the NFC East going into training camp.
Eagles
The Eagles and Howie strike again. He gets all his key free agents back and kills it in the draft. Resigning Slay and Bradberry were huge. They get Carter to play DT which addressed one of their needs after the loss of Hargraves to the 49ers. They picked up D’Andre Swift which solidifies the running back position.
Biggest Needs:
Safety
They picked up Terrrel Edmunds but I still think they need a safety. Can Reed Blankenship step in and be the answer.Losing Johnson in free agency creates a hole at nickel.
Off the Ball LB
They have some unanswered questions at LB. Nicholas Morrow will be a player to keep an eye on after losing TJ Edwards to the Bears and Kyzir White to the Cardinals. Is Nakobe Dean ready to take the reigns and be the starter in the middle. Big questions in the middle of the defense.
Guard
Losing Seumalo to the Steelers was a big blow, but Howie only had so much $ to spend. Tyler Steen and Cam Jurgens will battle for the left guard spot.
Cowboys
They made some nice signings bringing in Brandin Cooks, CB Stephon Gilmore and S Donovan Wilson. The biggest loss was TE Dalton Schultz and McGovern at Guard. They lost Zeke but Zeke definitely has lost a step and it was the right move.
TE
They addressed their wr room with Cooks and have Gallup and Lambe so they won’t be hurting in the passing game. But that being said, Schultz averaged 66 catches per year over the past 3 seasons and was a safety blanket for Prescott. It remains to be seen whether Jake Ferguson, 19 catches can double his production and what they will get out of highly touted draft pick Luke Schoonmaker.
RB
Some questions at RB with the injury to Pollard. It remains to be seen what they get out of rookie Deuce Vaughan who they took in the 6th round. RB matter and they are slim at the position right now.
O LINE
The Cowboys have some issues upfront and will be interesting how it plays out. They lost Mcgovern to the Bills which was a big loss. Tyron Smith (LT), Tyler Smith (LG), Tyler Biadasz (C), Zack Martin (RG), and Terence Steele are the project starters. The right side looks strong. The Left side may have some competition if Tyron Smith doesn’t regain his form. Also, Terrence Steele may not be ready for training camp which is another concern.
Giants
The Giants benefitted from a weak schedule and great coaching to make the playoffs. Now, they have to continue to get better as they enter the 2023 season. They play a much tougher schedule and have 2 tough teams to catch in the division in Philadelphia and Dallas. They have some holes to fill and it will be a challenging schedule this season.
Biggest Needs
Offensive Line(guard)
The Giants lost Feliciano and Gates and addressed the center position with Schmitz who should provide a long term solution. Left guard is still a concern with what looks like Bredeson and Ezudea fighting it out. Another player on the interior would help.
Safety
Mckinnon and Pinnock lead the group this year after losing starter Julian Love for 6 million to the Seahawks. Time will tell at the position as they may be in need of another safety.
WR
It’s very hard to win in this league with wr that get separation and without a #1 wr. The Giants have a bunch of #2 and #3 wr that just doesn’t stack up with the rest of the division. This will be a problem if not addressed. Waller doesn’t solve all your problems and he has been injury prone the past 2 years only playing 20/33 games. He does help.
Washington Commanders
Washington has a very good defense and played well defensively last year. Unfortunately, the qb situation may put a damper on their playoff hopes. Also, Chase Young wants a new contract and may not be back.
Biggest Needs:
QB
Handing the reigns to a rookie with very little body of work will be interesting. Sam Howell will be given the opportunity and we shall see what he does with it. Jacoby Brissett is a game managing backup who can keep you in games. The qb situation is the #1 position of need.
OLINE
They addressed OT in free agency by signing Wylie from the Chiefs. But they were one of the most sacked teams in 2022. Leno started every game the last 2 years but gave up 8 sacks last year. Wylie gave up 9. Thats top 5 in the nfl for sacks allowed at their positions. Guard is also an interesting situation with Chris Paul and Sam Cosmi expected to start. The group lacks some stability and Nick Gates coming off a tough injury also is a concern.
DE
Chase Young has been hurt and they didn’t pick up his option. Plenty of reports saying he will be traded. Montez Sweat is a heck of a player. Young’s situation makes this a position of concern at DE.
My Predictions:
Cowboys 12-5
Eagles 11-6
Giants 8-9 Washington 6-11
