NFL Pre Season: NY Jets Recap: Jets Browns takeaways-Players that stood out
I did some quick analysis of the Jets Brown game last night. Quick Takeaways from the Jets Browns game.
QB
Zach Wilson played with some confidence and made some good decisions. He looked confident with his eyes and really maintained his poise in the pocket. He had a great connection with Malik Taylor on the throw below.
Tim Boyle looks like the solid #2 as he did a nice job moving the chains in the 2 minute drill and threw several nice throws during that drill. Will be interesting how that competition plays out. Let’s not make it political.
Offensive Line
Becton impressed and was moving well. He did some good things.
The Rookie center Tippman looked very good. He was solid in the run game and in pass protection.
Here he does a nice job in protection
At right tackle, Mitchell struggled in pass protection a few times. It is the #1 position of concern moving forward into the 2023 season.
Some Becton Clips below(He looks very good)
Wide Receiver
Malik Thompson looked very good. The Jets already have a veteran room with Wilson, Lazard, Cobb and Corey Davis. What’s one more piece. He will be vying for a roster spot. Don’t see any other guys vying for that 5th spot. Maybe Ericson who had a few catches.
Running Back
The rookie Israel Abanikanda has some scoot to him. He can move as is evident in this nice run as the defensive end has leverage and he just outruns him and beats everyone to the pylon.
A nice run by the rookie below.
Defense
Defensive Line
Huff and Clemons were active and all over the field. Both will be impact players this year. I need to see more of the rookie Macdonald, I just don’t see him holding up in the run game. Very active did some good things but want to see what happened when teams run right at him. Here’s a really nice spin move below.
But when teams run right at him, his lack of size will be an issue. Once he adds the weight, he can be a special player. Heres an example when he just gets washed down by a tight end on a big run.
Linebacker
Surrat was very active as a middle linebacker. Made some really nice plays and was around the football.
Claudia Cherilus is another guy to keep an eye on as the season develops! Active around the football, may be a practice squad player. They have a solid starting group.
Sherwood is vying for that 3rd linebacker spot and still has as a grasp on it. The biggest question is who plays the 3rd Linebacker when they get 21 and 12 personnel on early downs.
Secondary
Tough to see without the all 22 version but I did notice #35 Travis Dye around the football quite a bit. Need to look at Echols and Hall and see how they played but are in the conversation for spots in the secondary. Davis was ok early but again, the starting unit really didn’t play so the backup positions are pretty decent right now with players with experience(Hall, Davis, Echols) although Echols had way too many penalties to my liking and whiffed on a deep ball he should have intercepted.
All in all, it wasn’t a bad night and hopefully more questions will be answered after the 2nd preseason game.
