Oklahoma Run Game vs Alabama Defense
Oklahoma had a great game plan in their victory over Alabama. They were able to do it with a very successful run game as well as being effective in their play action passing game. On the day, Oklahoma had 49 carries for 260 yards, averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
They did it both with their QB Jackson Arnold and RB Xavier Robinson. Both were very effective running the football. Arnold had 25 carries for 131 yards and Robinson had 18 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
Let’s look at some schemes.
Counter
The first scheme and plays we will look at is counter. They had success running counter.
They ran some G-T counter with both the QB and the RB.
Here are 2 of the schemes:
In the first they run G-T and bypass the spiller. The DE is trying to bounce it outside so the guard doesn’t block him and takes the next color outside of him.
Scheme
Bypass the puller
The Guard runs by the spiller intentionally, going for the next jersey that shows outside of it.
Counter Scheme with Orbit Motion!
The next scheme looks at handling a team that wants to spill overlap. The Alabama defense is spilling so Oklahoma makes an adjustment and sends the h back inside for the LB. The Tackle takes the DE and the Guard still is looking outside outside but the h leads inside!
Nice job on the scheme with the H leading inside in the A gap.
Clips below of these 2 schemes and 2 other counter plays
Zone Slice Options and RPO’s
A few RPO and one with the zone read with the run pass option attached. The first is zone slice with 2 pullers!
3 film clips!
Zone Read
They ran some zone read variations and had success in the process. They did both with and without slice blocking on the backside.
Here are the clips of zone read!
Other Clips
Toss read, shovel pass and other run schemes are below!
I hope you enjoyed this analysis of the Oklahoma offense vs Alabama. They did a great job with their run game schemes in this game!
