Pass Offense: Attacking Man Coverage in the Red Zone. Slant/Rub Route
There are several rub routes you can run in the red zone vs man coverage. One way is the slant route with the rub route by #2.
The Chargers
Slant off the Rub route
The Chargers run the slant by #1 off the pick by #2 in the green zone(1-6 yard line) in the first example they do it out of 11 personnel with the tight end on the bottom of the screen. Clip is below:
Below they come out in empty and put the RB to the bottom of the screen. The TE is up top as they run a square in up top. They get the match up they want on the bottom of the screen and hit the slant. Clip below
The 3rd play is the progression off the rub. After the pick is set the #2 wr will bend it back inside.
The pick is set and then he runs the slant back inside
The slant off the rub is open for the touchdown. Clip below
All 3 clips of the play above and a few other variations.
Convert the route
Another way to run the concept is the outside guy runs a whip route depending on leverage. He has the ability to convert the route.
This is shown in the example below as the defense plays combo on #1 and #2.
The outside WR runs a whip route because the defense is playing combo. The inside LB has a tough time defending it because of leverage and both routes become open.
The defense is playing combo so the #1 wr runs the whip route. The #2 wr sets his rub concept and breaks it back inside.
The rub concept opens up for #1 as the CB gets fooled by the concept. TD
The fake rub and corner route. The #2 runs the fake rub and go. #1 runs the slant off it.
The corner route is open and the QB hits it. Nice design off the fake rub route.
