In order to be balanced on offense, you need to have ways to get the ball on the perimeter. You may not have those great athletes where you can run outside zone or stretch so you have to do it in other ways.
Their are several ways to get the ball on the perimeter in the run game. Out of the gun, they are pin and pull, gun toss and jet sweep. In the SEC, it seems like everyone is running some type of gun toss.
So gun toss can be run different ways. You can run it with our without a read component on the DE. We will look at all those options in the article as well as traditional toss for those teams without a running QB.
There are many ways to run Toss with a read component:
They combine it at times with QB counter and read the defensive end. You can also tag a wrap scheme to it and pull the backside guard to the front side LB. The other thing they compliment it with is their play action sail concept.

The 49ers and Shanahan love running toss out of the gun. They create angles with motion and effectively use motion to create the blocking assignments that they want.
Kentucky Read Counter
Kentucky will read the DE for either toss or qb run. If the DE squeezes toss the football. If he widens it’s a qb designed run.
The DE uses a squeeze technique so the QB tosses the ball on the perimeter. IF the DE widened he would keep the ball.
