Some Concepts of the Washington Huskies Football Defense under Coach Belichick
The New England Patriots were one of the best in the league at adjusting their man coverages to take away what you do best. They did this under the direction of Bill and Steve Belichick. Steve is now the defensive coordinator with the Washington Huskies.
Let’s look at two things in this article. Number 1 is their man free concepts. They are exceptional at this. The 2nd part of this article will look at how they develop their pass rush games to take advantage of a weak link on the offensive line.
They will play some of the following concepts:
1. Man free- with 5 man rush and some games
An example of 5 man pressure with a peel rule on the RB
2. Man free with 3 or man rushÂ
3. Man free with one of the safeties robbing and the other as a deep 1/3 player
4. Man free with the 1 wr side cb acting as the robber. with the safety covering #1. They read the release of the wr with the cb on this concept.
5. Man free-4 man rush ,2 rat defenders both out of their penny 5-1 and 4-2 front.
6. Man free- 5 man rush, safety and sam exchange responsibilities on #2 crossing
7. Cover 0 6/7 man pressures- (late dropper at times) Some eyes principles
8. Man free with combo on the RB and Tight End vs 11 Personnel
9. Man free double-bracket a best WR. Double cover a top WR, other safety plays middle 1/3
Example Below Bracket on Keenan Allen

Pass Rush Games!
The other aspect of the defense is they are great at developing pass rush games. They really watch offensive lineman in protection and find the weak side to run pass rush games at. Here is an example where the right guard was a turner in the Colts game and they ran some games at him. They will often look for that guard that turns his shoulders in protection and run games at him to exploit that weakness.
This is just a small sample of what you will see with Belichick with his man concepts and pass rush games. I hope you enjoyed this post!
