Steve Sark Sarkasian top RPO's in the Texas Offense
Below you will find some of the top RPO of Steve Sarkasian.
Sarkisian is one of the best offensive minds in football and has several key philosophies. He love to tie running the football with RPOs and then how he builds the passing game off of those concepts and how defense typically try to defend them. He is excellent at working with young qb and training them to be efficient in the read game.
The biggest thing about his rpo game is that Sarkisian wants to get his wide receivers the ball on the run, especially since defenses that prefer to play zone coverages are typically forced out of them quickly by RPOs. He stresses the defense and makes them have to play man coverage often. Once he attacks defenses that want to play zone and gets them into man coverage, Sarkisian wants to run his other mesh cross, shallow and other crossing routes to create advantages down field. He still tries to get his wide receivers the ball on the move and in space to take advantage of their athleticism.
As a defense, it puts great stress on how to prepare for him, especially when he starts throwing all his motions into the rpo game.
Let’s look at a few:
Orbit Reverse motion
Below are 2 clips with orbit reverse motion. Both times they catch the defense in a fire zone. You get a glance by #1.The defense is in a cover 3 fire zone and the read takes the qb to the swing route. The WR in motion is wide open.
In the next example of reverse motion, they get another fire zone look. They are running sweep to the boundary with an rpo tagged.
CB shows like he is going if #8 doesn't turn around. Interesting change on the fly for Texas
They actually throw it as a lateral on this one way behind the LOS.
Orbit slip Screen to H Back
They run some orbit screens as well. Here is a nice one with the orbit motion man leading on the CB on the H slip screen. Great play design.
First they shift the TE then run the orbit and the slip screen is wide open!
Sweep RPO #3 vertical seem route
They run the sweep with #3 on the vertical route. TE is wide open off the wide horizontal sweep run action.
3x1 formation
They catch Rice in a cover 3 fire zone pressure.
Glance out of 12 personnel
The defense adjusts and rotates to a 3 strong look. This leaves a void in the alley which makes it a very easy route to throw. Pre snap they defense has gone one way opens it up. The run action is ISO.
Glance concept #2
#2 is out of 11 with a slot glance to the field. The SS takes and plays the bubble hard which opens up the glance window. Nice catch and throw for a 77 yard pass. They run it off inside zone.
12P 2023
RPO off return/yo yo motion, End takes the Rb so the QB pulls the football
Alabama Clips 2020
Here’s the glance route off an outside trap scheme at Alabama, Safety outside leverage tells you its cover 1 and he makes a nice read on the glance route.
#2 Alabama slip screen to the RB
They run the slip screen but the WR does a terrible job or even a bigger gain. Hurts reads the overhang and does a nice job on it.
11 personnel
RPO is 1 bubble with the sweep to the boundary. Nice job of getting on the edge to block it with the 2 lead blockers. QB sees the blitz and easy read, gets 2 on 2 on the perimeter. Nice play in the red zone.
Texas Pin and Pull Exit Motion Key Screen
12P
2nd level RPO , read the SS. They get 2 over 1 so he throws it.
In conclusion, Sark does a great job of getting his wr and skill guys the ball on the run where they can do damage in the pass game and on the move. Complete that with an outstanding run game and you have an excellent football scheme.
