Tampa Bucs Liam Coen Kentucky 12 personnel Duo with x, y, z wrap
Liam Coen is back in the NFL as the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Bucs. He has roots to the Rams and 49ers as he worked with both programs.
Kentucky in 2021 was a very good offensive football team. They did an outstanding job and scored 32 points per game under Coach Liam Coen, Some of is it was because of some of the schemes he took from the 49ers and Rams before ironically joining them in 2022 in the NFL. He was at Kentucky in 2023 where they put up 29 points per game.
One play he loves to run is his wrap play. It was an effective play out of 12 personnel as you would get excellent double teams up front with action often starting in one direction and cutting it back to the other side. It is duo duo up front with the center going opposite the RB designed aiming point. Kentucky does a great job running it with the front side WR or h executing a find block on the perimeter to the play side. A find block is when the last man on the line of scrimmage will come down and block the run support safety. Also on the play, it’s Duo blocking with the opposite wr wrapping around to the other side to block #4 in the defensive scheme. It is traditional duo blocking with the RB reading the play side lb on whether to keep it inside or bounce it on the perimeter.
They do an excellent job with this scheme and ran it in a few games. Great play and execution by Kentucky out of 12 personnel.
Duo wrap with motion
Example #2 vs Tennessee
They run a similar scheme. Again they are in 12 personnel but will do it with the h back. They are in 2x2 12 deuce formation. (one tight end on each side) nice job as the h kicks out and the wr finds the run support safety.
Example #3
They run it vs Louisville out of condensed. Y has the #4 and the wr play side blocks the play side safety on the find block. Nice job with the duo combinations up front for an 8 yard gain. You see the find block by the end man. They block solid and the h back leads up on the cb.
Example #3
WR leading on the cb again.
Here's a variation with the wr leading on the safety. They block power with the H back kicking out.
You can see #84 at the x starting to come across and will lead on the safety
Outside TE block the cb
H back kick out the DE
PST on LB
OG block the Nose
Center combo to the backside LB
These are some examples of the x wrap and y wrap schemes that Kentucky utilize in their run game. They do an excellent job with it and get a wr coming across and doing a great job in their blocking schemes.
