The Miami Dolphins Utilization of Motion and Formations in Their Gap Run Schemes
The Miami Dolphins are an excellent run offense. Although their record is 2-5, it doesn’t take away from the fact that they are an efficient run team. They are 9th in the league in rushing averaging 132 yards per game.
They are one of the top teams at creating angles with their gap schemes. They do this with splits in formations and utilizing various motions to create blocking angles for their players.

Power with Short Motion
Off Tackle Power
Off Tackle Lead
Gap Duo Double H Lead Concept
#1 Off Tackle Kick(no puller)
They motion Hill with the nasty split from the x. This causes the OLB to widen and get depth, thus creating a running lane.
#2 Power with Short Motion
They do a great job getting the OLB to widen by formation below. He walks out with Hill which creates a huge running lane just by alignment. The Patriots are in their under 3-4 personnel because the Dolphins are in 12 personnel. The TE is on the right with the FB who comes in motion.
They create great angles. Just look at the hole created by formation and motion. (see clips below)
Later in the game they run the same scheme.
This time the running back keeps it tighter as the Patriots bring the safety down into the box.
You see #24 come down so the RB cuts it north right away(see clips)
#3 Duo with the Angle created by motion
They run duo and create an excellent angle for the FB in motion. Again they get the OLB to widen and it creates a nice running lane.
Look at the hole widen and because the guard and tackle do a great job the RB keeps it inside.
The LB dips his head outside so the RB cuts it inside.

Double Lead
#1 Double lead with motion is a gap scheme that can attack odd and bear fronts. Here is an example below.
It starts with a nasty split by the WR which creates a nice running lane.
Everyone blocks gap rules inside and then they lead the h back around and thru for the LB

#2 They run double lead with the h back and the full back. They create angles as the DE is wider and the SS jumps outside with the motion.
The nasty split gets the DE to widen and create a running lane. They get 5 hats aon hats and get the nice run as a result.
