Let’s take a look at the Jets and some of their struggles in their offense. They have had a rough 2 weeks, partly because they were playing top 10 defenses with the Vikings and Broncos.
Let’s take a look at some of the issues and what I see:
The run game has been highly ineffective. Trying to run into the teeth of the Broncos and Vikings defense is not ideal. They aren’t really attempting to get the ball on the edge and relying on runs against really good defenses between the tackles. In their 3 losses, the run game has struggled.
Vs The Broncos 18-38 yards
Vs The Vikings 14-36 yards
Vs the 49ers 19-68 yards
In their 3 losses they have gone 51 for 144 yards 2.82 yards per carry
In the 2 wins they ran for 100 yards in both games they were over 100. So it’s easy to say that when they run for over 100 yards they win!
Vs The Titans 24 for 101 yards, 4.2 yards yards per carry
Vs The Patriots 33 for 133 yards, 4.0 yards per carry
Once, Moses went down, Fashanu had to be the starter. That isn’t ideal because he was not an outstanding run blocker in college so he needed a year to develop that skill set. He was a great pass blocker but the NFL speed is a little different. Now they are relying on him and he has potential but isn’t quite there yet in the run game.
They must come up with a better pass protection plan. Teams are starting to tee off on Rodgers. He was hit 11 times and sacked 5 times vs the Vikings. In the Broncos game he was hit 14 times and sacked 5 times. That is just not very good for an offensive line that was supposed to be revamped. Part of that starts with an effective run game and staying out of 3rd and long situations.
Poor timing on throws. There was some opportunities to make plays but the back shoulder throws have been an issue. Also, Rodgers has been sloppy and needs to tighten up his mechanics. He’s an elite QB and needs to get back to the things that made him successful.
Drops have been an issue. Lazard, Allen and Wilson all had bad drops that put them in 3rd and long situations vs the Vikings.
They have no one other than Garrett Wilson that scares you in the passing game. They have seen some cover 0,1 and in years past teams were afraid to blitz Rodgers. The Broncos played a ton of man against the Jets as well as combo coverage in which they went man on Wilson, zone on everyone else. Now, it is starting to become the norm. Better get some help on the way. It’s hard to run an effective play action game when you don’t have a vertical stretch WR to really open things up for Wilson on the digs and and y cross concepts. Wilson is the vertical threat, but you’d love to run him behind the post or opposite in those dig windows.
Interesting use of personnel. On 3rd and 2 and 4th and 1 they don’t have Garrett Wilson on the field. That’s 2 weeks in a row your best wr isn’t on the field. When they ran 2x on the goal line with Hall and went play action vs the Broncos, he wasn’t on the field either.
They don’t run a ton of rub routes in the red zone or short yardage, and could utilize motion and bunch sets in those red zone situations. More play action and some different play action concepts. Those may help their QB.
Some Film Analysis:
Example #1
A drop by Lazard and on the next play was a key interception on 3rd and 6. An easy first down, turns into a disastrous turnover on the next play.
Example #2
A simple screen is dropped that brings up a long 3rd and 8 and they try to run dagger. He throws the ball so early and it is well overthrown. Just a bad throw and the early pressure may have caused this errant throw.
Example #3 A key drop or bad throw by Rodgers and the next play is an all out blitz in which the veteran QB doesn’t even see it. They bring 4 to the side of the RB and create a mismatch with
Example #4
Not sure if this is an option route but if Wilson runs the slant it’s a touchdown. But, either way you have to catch this ball. The next throw is a very low back shoulder fade. Catchable but a very difficult catch.
Examples of some pass concepts vs the Broncos, The first example is the jets trying to run mesh, but the combo coverage takes away Wilson and the pressure is able to get home.

Clip #3
Here they try to run outside and the Broncos shut it down.
These are some of the issues with the Jets offense. We hope to see the pass and run game get going, and for them to have success moving forward.
