The Vikings Defense: Under Front
Today we are looking at the Minnesota Vikings Defense against 12 personnel. I did my first article on them playing their 3-4 defense vs 12 personnel, 21 personnel and 13 personnel.
In this article we look at their use of the under front vs 12 Personnel. They use this front quite a bit as part of their base package. We will look at some stunts movements and coverages they utilize in this front, as they 2nd in the league this year against the run. On the back end, they primarily run split field concepts, cover 4, cover 2 and cover 6. They also can go man on the #1 WR while zone on the other side which they sprinkle in from time to time.
Under Front
You can see the alignments below in their under front.
Under Front 2
The Ravens under front as a reference.
Now you see a ton of split field coverage with the 2 OLB/ILB as the drop players if pass. They will often send 2 of the 4 ILB and OLB and play cover 4 or 6 with the other 2 players as underneath defenders.
Here is what cover 2 and 4 look like from their odd schemes. In the first example, they send the T and drop the Sam , Will and Mike.
Below is cover 6 another split field concept where the Sam drops to the curl, flat. They run different variations of this concept.
Let’s look at the film clips.
Here’s 10 clips on the Vikings Defense.
I hope you found this video informative. The Vikings have a top defense and will be a tough opponent all season.
