Top Play Action Pass Concepts of the Kansas Jayhawks Football Offense.

Kansas was a very efficient football team in many different categories. They were especially effective in aspects of their passing game. It all started with their run game, over 200 yards a game but they also did some good things throwing the ball.

Offensive Statistics:

  • 10th in 3rd down efficiency

  • 18th in points per game, 33.7

  • 8th in team passer rating 16

  • 2nd yards per pass attempt 10.1

  • 3rd in yards per completion 16.1

  • 21st yards per game

I see some similarities in their offense and Liberty/Coastal’s version. They do so many things with shifts, motions and unbalanced that makes them very difficult to prepare for. They also are very successful running the football which opens up the play action game. They also run some option, a few rpos which assists them in having such a great play action attack. But, because they do so much, they force teams to play more zone and it opens up some passing windows.

Let’s look at some play action concepts:

Boot Sneak Route

This is a route they will run usually 1-2 times a game. They run it from different sets and will often hit either the RB or TE the other way off boot action.

You see the TE delay and then come across as the RB goes down the sideline. It is a 5 man protection.

The #2 TE on the left takes the sam and free safety with him.

It leaves the stretch on the outside LB.

The TE is wide open as the OLB has to take the wheel by the RB.

Sneak Route #2

They run it from a different set but get the same result. The RB is wide open on it.

The TE comes across and the runs down the seem inside the DE. The RB is wide open and the QB gets him the ball.

Both clips are below!
