Tyler Roehl North Dakota State QB Designed Run Game
North Dakota State was a great football team in their 2023 season. They made it to the FCS semifinals before losing to Montana 31-29. On the year, they averaged 38 points per game and 238 yards rushing per game. They also averaged 5.8 yards per carry. They did it primarily running physical football with numerous gap schemes.
The interesting part is they often played 2 QB’S or should we say had an extensive wildcat package. Their 2nd QB Cole Payton, rushed for 697 yards on 84 carries. Cam Miller also rushed for 600 yards so they amassed a total of 1297 yards from the QB position.
But, they would play both and let’s look at some of the schemes they utilized with Payton in their wildcat package. When they went to this, they would sub Miller their starter out of the game. They often did it with 13P and 12P but also had some 11P QB designed runs like below with numerous gap schemes.
11P Unbalanced QB Power
They run QB power and get an outstanding double team from the guard and tackle. They move him to the other side of the center and it actually forces the Guard to come off on the safety.

12 P Power Read
They double with the RG and RT to the offside LB and wrap the guard around for the playside LB. They read the DE like traditional Power Read teams.
The QB fakes as he sees the DE widen and keeps it. They double and work to the offside LB. A nice hole is created in the read key.
