Using Trips Nub in Your Offensive Playbook-Kingsbury, Sark & More
This article looks at utilizing trips formation with a tight end backside in your offensive playbook. It is a very efficient formation and can be used with 11 or 12 personnel.
Teams have done it with true trips but also with a TE as the#3 WR. The consistent element is having a tight end on the ball to the 1 WR side.
There are several ways to utilize different wide receiver sets to the trips side.

What are the advantages of this formation:
1. The formation can create a numbers game for the defense, forcing them to make difficult decisions about how to distribute their personnel and coverage responsibilities. Do they put three outside to help in the passing game, thus creating a light box.
2. Making the CB the run support to the TE side. This is a key component as offenses want to put the defense in the position to make the CB a run support guy. If they run a pin and pull or sweep scheme, the CB often has to take on a guard as a lead blocker.
3. You can get a #’s advantage if the defense rolls to the trips side as teams will often do.
4. It’s a great formation to run RPO’s out of. You can often get 3 over 2 on the perimeter and incorporate your screen and vertical rpo game.
Let’s look at a few teams who run the set and some plays you can incorporate.
Commanders Film
You will see sweep, pin and pull and T wrap as three run schemes they use with their RPO 11 Nub Package. They tag a screen or bubble with it and you can have options on the outside.
Commanders Zone Read
You can run zone read and also tag it with a bubble or screen. If you put the back to the TE side, you will often get the 3 technique set that way, which opens up the zone read the other way. Center and Guard can get to the DT and LB in your zone scheme.
