Utah 4-2-5 Defense: Morgan Scalley Twist Run Stunt on Early Downs
I love watching Utah football and defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley. For years, he has always been a top defense and a great coordinator for years.
Against run teams he likes to run some interesting run stunts on early downs to disrupt the run game. Here are one he used in a game vs Arizona State.
Twist
One stunt he used is the twist stunt.
You set the front to the side of the RB. The 3 technique in this situation is to the side of the back.
DT away from the back is in a 2 technique. He goes 1st and tries to get across the center. His first step is flat and then crosses over. He tries to stay square on his movement.
DT to the side of the back is in a 3 technique. He is the looper and goes 2nd. He is trying to get to the offside A.
LB: They read and react, The play side B gap and eye opener on the other side.
Example 1

Example 2
The RB is on the other side so they run it the other way.
Notice the 3 technique set to the side of the RB and the DT opposite
The DT beats the center across and the 3 technique loops
Here’s my 5 minute clinic on the concept with 5 clips and highlights
Here’s another one you can use if you want to bring pressure. It’s a 6 man pressure with both OLB coming and playing eyes coverage. Eyes is 2 under 3 deep
This clip is in the video above.
I hope you enjoyed this article and find this stunt useful in your scheme.
