What to do with the Jets 2023 QB situation; Who can help the Jets win at QB in 2023?
As the Jets analyze their QB room, they have to make a decision on their team. What to do about the current QB situation. Their are several ways to go. One involves trading for an elite QB in Cousins or Stafford or slightly above average QB in Tannehill. But, both of those probably won’t happen until the deadline.
Try to trade for a Championship caliber QB. It would be great if the Jets went after Stafford, Cousins or maybe Tannehill. Cousins and Tannehill are on the last part of their contracts and can possibly be free agents next year. Cousins will cost his new team between $6 and 8 mil depending on when he is traded. Tannehill is owed a 27,000,000 prorated salary so he will be a little more costly. His new team would have to restructure to make it more cap friendly. Both also have friendlier cap hits than maybe a Matt Stafford, which makes Stafford less tradeable. Tannehill didn’t exactly light it up last year so I don’t know if he is the answer. Stafford still looks more than capable of leading an offense and produced five big-time throws in the Rams' win on Sunday. The only way these probably happen is around week 7, as no team wants to throw in the towel just yet. If you see a 1-6 or 2-5 start, expect some rumblings regarding all 3. Also, expect some competition from the Falcons, who are a quarterback away from contending.
Sign a veteran: The best 2 options on the market are Matt Ryan and Carson Wentz. I think Ryan has some left in the tank and may be able to help the Jets contend. Another name being whispered is Phillip Rivers. Rumors are saying that he still has the bug to play. Of this group, Matt Ryan gets the nod.
Trade for a veteran backup: A few options here. I really like Andy Dalton of the Panthers and Jameis Winston of New Orleans. Dalton did a credible job last year with an average wr room. Winston did throw for 4,000 yards and can push the ball down field. Another option is Cooper Rush, who may be expendable with the addition of Trey Lance. It doesn’t make sense to bury Lance behind rush after trading for him. The Cowboys need a cb so maybe a Hall for Rush trade makes sense.
Stick with Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle: Lets give Wilson a few games with to see how it pans out. He does look a little better and hopefully he can be serviceable with the weapons in the backfield with Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook, as well as Wilson and Lazard at WR. I’m sure the Jets will evaluate this very closely in the next 4 weeks and a decision will be made.
Only time will tell as the season moves on. We will wait and see what the Jets do with the qb situation!
