What to expect from the Aaron Rodgers Jets offense in 2023
We have a new quarterback in town and an established offensive coordinator in Nathaniel Hackett. We all know the excitement Rodgers has brought to the big apple and what it means for the team. We also have seen them add some other pieces on offense in 4 time pro bowler Dalvin Cook and wide receivers Allan Lazard, Corey Davis and Randall Cobb. This offense is primed to improve in many areas and will be considerably better in 2023.
Here are some of the changes and things you will see that may go unnoticed to the average fan.
Rodgers will have total control of the offense on game day. He will have the flexibility to change plays at the line of scrimmage and be the field general at all times. He doesn’t like something the play will be changed. He will have more check with me’s than any qb the Jets have had at the helm.
Here’s an example where he sees something he doesn’t like and changes the play at the LOS. He feels cover 3 fire zone coming, sees the off coverage on Devontae and changes the play at the LOS.
He will have final say in protection calls at the line of scrimmage. This is important as he is such a smart quarterback, he will get to change the protection and have final say over the center. That wasn’t the case the past few years with young QB’s as they were often trumped by the center. This is one of the reasons Rodgers is the hardest quarterback in the league to pressure, he has the final say and is extremely smart.
In 2021, Rodgers' rating vs. the blitz was 113.5 compared to 109.7 when not blitzed. That is pretty good. He got better when pressured, thus many coordinators around the league won’t blitz him.
Even in his off year in 2022, with far less talent he was better against pressure, Rodgers' passer rating vs. the blitz was 97.1 compared to 88.5 when not blitzed. Again, because of his ability to read and get rid of the ball quickly. This will help the offensive line tremendously, not getting blitzed as much.
They will mask their average run game, and right now it is average to below with run pass options on early downs. When in the gun on early downs or even under center, they will call run pass options that will give the quarterback the option to hand it off or pass it on the perimeter if the wr has leverage. This will help on early downs with efficiency.
They won't have to mask the play calling as Rodgers still has plenty of arms strength to push the ball down the field. You will see a vertical play action game that will keep teams off balance. The Jets were not very efficient throwing the ball downfield last year and this year, their will be a major difference in that category.
Packers run y cross
Defense tries to go cover 3 which they are in pre snap and post snap and Rodgers makes the decision to throw the dig. But again, tough to load the box vs him on early downs. That should help the run game.
The run game will improve and the major reason is Aaron Rodgers will be at the helm. You will see more 2 deep coverages against the elite qb which will in theory lead to more rushing yards and better efficiency as a team in the run game. If teams are playing more 2 deep coverages on early downs, that will essentially open the run game. Usually, the difference in run game vs non loaded boxes is .4 yards per carry. So just from having Rodgers expect a similar result.
Packers have always been great at creating angles in the run game with motions, shifts and other things. Hackett has been involved with it and has had great success. They have been efficient with it. Here it is off motion.
A more gap based run scheme: You will see more power football from Hackett. The Jets have these type of lineman and I am excited to see more gap/man schemes in the run game. They will have some zone concepts but love some of the gap schemes Hackett has run over the years.
More Iso and Wrap schemes from Hackett.
Iso is one play you will see from them when they go 2 back. Notice the 2 high secondary as teams will often stay that way vs Rodgers led teams.
Well these are some of the things to expect from the New Jets offense in 2023. I hope you enjoyed this post and share it to other Jets fans!
