Willy Korn 2023 Liberty and 21 Coastal Play Action Passing Attack
Liberty Play action:
The Liberty football offense is very efficient. Their play action game off their option game is very good. They succeed because teams are so worried about their run game that it opens up windows in the vertical passing game. They really do a nice job carrying out their fakes and getting wr vertical, usually with 3 players on vertical routes.. They also have a package where they release the te on a wheel route opposite from the side he started on.
Up front they will often full slide with protection with the dive back blocking backside in the full slide scheme. It is often a 6 man protection with the other rb carrying out the option fake with a swing route.
The big difference in how they evolved is at Liberty they will run more off their wide zone run action than off the triple option. That may be because their freshman QB Kaidon Salter is very good and efficient. He is an excellent passer with good touch and velocity
Let’s look at some schemes both in 21 with Coastal and 23 with Liberty.
They run this on the first play. They get nice action and the te runs the deep crossing route with #1 on the post corner.
Play action with the crossing route.
They full slide on the protection
excellent job freezing the defensive line with the slide protection.
Liberty Triple Option
They fake wide zone and orbit motion the other way and run post dig off the run action. with the back releasing to the flat.
Coastal Triple Option.
The next one is more of an RPO but look at the play action fake off the triple option, they still have slide principles and they hit the glance route for big yards. Nice execution as the QB reads the alley defender.
They fake the dive with the orbit motion to the perimeter. The motion freezes the olb and opens the post route.
The post is wide open as the outside linebacker has to respect the option game.
Liberty Wide Zone Play Action
With Liberty you see more play action off their wide zone schemes.
Below they run post dig with #1 and 2
Liberty 3x1 Y Cross
Liberty comes out in 3x1 with the TE backside. Umass is playing 4 to the field and brings the Safety down to the tight end side. The y cross gets open as the safety commits to the run.
