The Most Dangerous Offense in College Football: New Liberty Offense under Jamey Chadwell and Willy Korn
The New Liberty Offense will be fun to watch. It will be run under the direction of head coach Jamey Chadwell who replaces Hugh Freeze as the head coach.
The new offense comes from the staff that made Coastal Carolina very successful the past few years. Coach Chadwell was fortunate in the fact he was able to bring 2 of his top assistants with him. Offensive Coordinator Willy Korn and Offensive line coach Bill Durkin were brought with him and they will play big dividends.
Coastal Carolina does a great job offensively. They were 11-2 and had one of the best years in school history. They were 4th in the country in points scoring 40 points per game. That is impressive numbers on the year and a credit to the coaching staff. They are known for their efficient offense, one that led the nation in team passing efficiency (192.01) and No. 6 in rushing offense (228.8 yards per game) in 2021.the 2021 season ranked No. 1 nationally in average yards per rush (5.84) and in third-down completion percentage (53.8%), while ranking No. 2 nationally in yards per play on offense (7.74).
He also brought in Tony Washington who was with him in 20-21 and will serve as the pass game coordinator. The familiarity with the offense will be crucial to their success.
The offense will be broken down into several components:
It all starts with the option game. The aspect that makes it unique is that most of the sets they run are from 21 personnel with the h back in the game. They will also go 20 and 10 at times. They will run various formations including 4 wides.
21 personnel
Much of what they do starts in 21 personnel but they have the flexibility to move Into different sets based on what they have. As you recall, they had Isaiah Likely so he never left the field so they were in 21 and 11 the year he was there. But, they have the flexibility to change based on what they have.
10 personnel
12 personnel
20 personnel
Now let’s get into the various series that I will cover In my other posts.
Option Game:
Let's start with the option game. They have so many different pieces and complementary plays off it that make it very difficult to defend.
Part 1: Option Package: They run triple option which is hard enough in itself to defend but have other elements they attach to it. You will see them run trap with option movement, a swing pass off the dive fake and a vertical play action passing game. You will also see some counter/freeze option, lead option and speed option. Lastly, they will run dive option off wide zone movement in the other direction. This is the most difficult play to defense
Part 2 Play Action Passing Game: This component makes it really hard to defend. They are so efficient in what they do with the play action game. They run various concepts at you including the sail concept, deep over and other vertical concepts.
Part 3: RPO/ Screen Game:They are very creative with their rpo and crack screen game. They are efficient on early downs. You will see rpo glance routes, RB swing screens, 3x1 rpo power schemes with stick routes at the 3x1 side that freezes the lb. You will see rpo's off several run actions which creates tough reads for the LB's
Part 4. Non Option Creative run schemes: You will see different variations of gap schemes, with man, power, inside and outside trap, counter, wrap schemes, zone read, and some wide zone schemes thrown in. Ran a few boss plays out of 2 back with counter blocking in the other direction. Chadwell will also run some creative belly schemes with the center pulling on their belly outside trap play.
Part 5 Quick and sprint game: You will see some sprint concepts, some 3 step if you give it to them with 2 man snag, basic hitches, smash concepts and easy pass concepts on early downs to gain simple yardage.
Part 6 Jet Sweep Package: They will run jet sweep and boot off it. This replaces the traditional option teams that will run rocket toss and boot off it. You will often see them run jet out of 12 personnel.
These are the 6 parts I will discuss in my series and I hope you enjoy reading them.
